The Second Master is a member of the Senior Management Team and thus part of a consultative process regarding whole school policy decisions. He is the deputy to the Headmaster and is responsible to him for the oversight of all areas of school policy and procedure, including the detailed day-to-day running of the School. He will have a particular focus on the pastoral care system for both pupils and staff. The following list is not exhaustive but indicates the main areas of responsibility:
- Deputising for the Headmaster in his absence and taking on leadership of any management issue or project that the Headmaster might give him.
- Overall responsibility to the Headmaster for all aspects of boarding and day pupil pastoral policy and procedure, including ensuring compliance with Ofsted and ISI requirements.
- Management, supervision and support of all those working within the pastoral care system including Housemasters, Senior Student Housemasters, Tutors, Matrons, Medical Centre Staff and the School Counsellor.
- Responsible, as Designated Child Protection Co-ordinator, for all aspects of Child Protection.
- Support for teaching staff, conveying their views to the Headmaster and allocation of all teaching staff school accommodation. Liaising with and assisting the Director of Learning and Teaching in all aspects of induction and review of new teaching staff.
- Co-Chair of the Health and Safety Committee with particular responsibility for implementing Health and Safety policy decisions within the School. He will ensure regular liaison with the Bursar, Assistant Bursar, Estates Bursar and the Personnel Manager on all issues involving Health and Safety, accommodation or issues involving staff relations.
- Management of pupil behaviour, including involvement in disciplinary processes, communicating with parents and management and review of policy and procedure.
- Management and induction of School Praes.
