The Upper Master is a member of the Senior Management Team and thus part of a consultative process regarding whole school policy decisions. He is responsible to the Second Master and the Headmaster for the management of key aspects of pastoral provision across the school, for monitoring the activities of the top three years and for overseeing the school’s extra curricular provision. Close liaison with the Lower Master will also be important.

The following list is not exhaustive but indicates the main areas of responsibility:

  • The Upper Master will act as a Deputy Child Protection Officer, with particular responsibility for Child Protection training of both the support and teaching staff at Tonbridge.
  • Monitoring and reporting to the Second Master on all aspects of boarding and day pupil pastoral provision to ensure compliance with Ofsted and ISI requirements. This includes monitoring of all record-keeping in houses relating, among other things, to attendance, fire, punishments and complaints.
  • Management and development of the Student Voice agenda, including oversight of the School Councils, House Councils and Food Committees.
  • Meet with house tutors for the top three years twice in the Michaelmas term and once in the other terms to receive feedback on whole school issues involving the top three years, and to develop suitable initiatives to improve the way their needs are met, including the provision of year group meetings as appropriate.
  • Represent the interests of the top three years at Housemasters’ meetings.
  • Organise and implement the induction of new boys entering Tonbridge in the Sixth Form, working with the International Co-ordinator.
  • Co-ordination and oversight of the extra curricular provision of the school, including sports, music, drama, societies and Wednesday afternoon activities.
  • Liaising with JDG on the appointment, induction and management of Common Room GAP assistants.
  • Involvement in the appointment of new teaching staff.
  • Membership of the Chapel Committee and responsibility alongside the Chaplains for the management of services.
