All boys will be given 'War Horse' by Michael Morpurgo as a reader. They will also all attend the play version of the novel at the National Theatre during the Michaelmas term. Boys follow course on spelling, punctuation and grammar throughout the year (see updated English Handbook).
'Different Cultures' novel: either 'Things Fall Apart' Chinua Achebe, 'The Old Man and the Sea' Hemingway or selection of international stories called 'Opening Worlds'. Working on individual presentation skills, group interaction, and writing to argue, persuade and advise.
'Macbeth' and Arthur Miller's 'The Crucible', or 'Richard III'. For IGCSE Literature 'The God Boy' by Ian Cross (majority of the year group) or 'To Kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee. Selection of poems from the anthology 'The Song of Ourselves' (Wordsworth, Shelley, Heaney, etc.). Working on individual presentations and writing to analyse, review and comment.
'The Great Gatsby' and Wilfred Owen's the 'Selected Poems'. Coursework must include work published after 1990.
'Hamlet'; Pinter's 'The Homecoming' alongside Albee's 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf'; either 'The Merchant's Tale' or 'Paradise Lost IX and X'; either McEwan's 'Atonement' or Golding's 'Rites of Passage'.
