Resources And Facilities > ICT Provision and School Laptop Scheme > Laptop Scheme
Boys can bring personal laptops to school and connect them to the school network; this gives them access to the internet, the school's intranet, educational resources and software, and their own file storage. This is largely a facility used by boarders in the evening; for general daily use there are plenty of desktop computers which can be used around the school. However, there are also some wireless access points around the school.
There is no requirement to have a laptop in school, and any boarder who does not possess one will have the use of a "thin client" - a terminal on the school's network. Thin clients are more limited that laptops in that they cannot be used for multimedia - for example, DVD and video cannot be played or streamed on a thin client.
Any laptop on any operating system can be connected to the system, but parents may like to consider acquiring a laptop through the Tonbridge School purchase scheme, run for us by an Oxfordshire company, EAC Network Solutions. We have chosen three of the robust Dell Latitude range, and they come with Microsoft Vista Business, Office 2007 Pro and Sophos anti-virus pre-installed. The school's ICT Services department will provide support for scheme laptops, but each also comes with Dell next business day worldwide on-site 3 year warranty. We work closely with EAC on pricing, and I am satisfied that, when the complete specification is taken into account, it would not be possible to match these prices by going direct to Dell.
