Resources And Facilities > Smythe Library
The Smythe Library is contained in a fine building designed by Sir William Holford in 1962, and contains 26,000 volumes - some of which have been in the school’s possession since the seventeenth century. The oldest book in the Skinners Library collection is a Jenson Bible dated 1479. The Archives of Tonbridge School are also held in the Library together with a complete series of ‘The Tonbridgian’ magazine.
To support the current curriculum, there are 60 periodicals and several online subscriptions available on the Internet; there are also DVDs, videos, newspapers and other media available.
The library catalogue is on the School’s intranet so boys and staff can access the information from any computer within the school and Houses; departmental libraries are also being added to the catalogue. The Dictionary of National Biography is now available online through the catalogue to the whole community.
Fingerprint recognition is used for borrowing books from the Library, which is open from 8.00 am until 9.30 pm every day.
