An Audience with Victoria Hislop

Victoria Hislop read English at Oxford, and worked in publishing, PR and as a journalist before becoming a novelist. Her first novel, “The Island”, held the number one slot in The Sunday Times paperback charts for eight consecutive weeks, and has sold over two million copies worldwide. Her second novel, “The Return”, was also a Sunday Times number one bestseller, and her books have been translated into more than twenty languages. Her latest book, “The Thread”, was published in October, and it has received rave reviews. She will be telling us about her writing while being interviewed by John Taylor. This promises to be a fascinating evening. „I never knew how painful and difficult the history of modern Greece had been until I read “The Thread” - my favourite of her three novels so far.‟ Telegraph. Hislop's fast-paced narrative and utterly convincing sense of place make her novel a rare treat.‟ Guardian.

Lord Moynihan: “The 2012 Olympics and School Sport”

The E.M. Forster Theatre, 7.30pm for 8 p.m.

Tickets @ £5 from 01732 304241 Book Online

With just over a month to go before the opening ceremony, Lord Moynihan, Chairman of the British Olympics Association, will talk about the 2012 Olympics and the importance of school sport. Over 50% of the British Olympic medal winners come from private schools, yet the independent sector accounts for only 7% of the total number of athletes. What role will independent schools have in the future of sport in the United Kingdom? Lord Moynihan, who won an Olympic Silver Medal as a cox of the British Rowing VIII in Moscow in 1980, is keen to drive through a national sports legacy at school and grass roots level on the back of the 2012 Olympics. No one is better qualified to tell us about how things are going as we approach the opening of the 2012 Olympiad. Drinks will be available before and after the event, and there will be plenty of opportunity to put questions to a panel which will include the School's Director of Sport, Andy Whittall.
