Vianne (Juliette Binoche) and her young daughter open up a new Chocolate shop in a rural French village during Lent, to the disgust of the devout mayor. The chocolate confectionary soon provides passion, comfort and encouragement to the people of the village who accept the mother and daughter into their community but when Vianne falls for a gypsy (Johnny Depp), who has taken up residence on the parish outskirts, that tranquillity is shattered...
