Emperor Aurelius rewards victorious Roman General Maximius Decimus Meridus by naming him as his successor. Upon hearing the news Emperor Aurelius’s son, Commodus, murders his father and declares himself as ruler. Maximius refuses to serve Commodus who sanctions an assassination attempt upon him, which Maximius narrowly escapes, only to return home to his family who have been murdered in cold blood. Having collapsed Maximius wakes to find himself enslaved. The only way he can right the wrongs that have been done to him are to become a Gladiator and to fight, in the Coliseums of Rome, to come to the attention of Emperor Commodus himself. Could a single slave become more powerful than the Emperor of Rome?
