Woman in Mind centres on Susan whose long marriage to vicar, Gerald, has become dull, dull, dull. To escape her feelings of loneliness and neglect, as well as her batty sister-in-law, Susan invents a fantasy life where her husband adores her; she has an admiring brother and a talented daughter. This fantasy family seem to spend their time playing tennis and drinking champagne: the audience can see them, but the real family cannot.
As the play progresses, the two worlds become increasingly muddled and Susan becomes less able to either separate or control her parallel lives. This leads to hilarious, farce-style entertainment, as well as enormous sympathy for both Susan and her family.
Always a hit with adult theatre audiences, this Ayckbourn tragic-comedy is also suitable for KS4 and KS5 drama students looking to review a live performance with well defined characters and inventive staging. An education pack is available.
