Fifth Form - Learning About Leadership

Extra Curricular > Activities > CCF > Fifth form

No-one is a born leader, although most people have a number of leadership qualities to a greater or lesser degree. The aim of the CCF courses in the fifth form is to show cadets what leadership is all about and help them develop and promote the leadership qualities they possess. They learn that leadership is not just about being able to shout at people: it is about planning and organisation, self-confidence, powers of persuasion, decision-making; it is about building teams and building morale and solving problems. Cadets must face up to their fears, whether by taking a classroom session or by completing a tough assault course.

There are ample opportunities to put leadership into practice as well, although most of the situations are "self-contained": a 20 minute command task, for example. Throughout the year there are also many opportunities for to cadets to develop their knowledge and expertise in other areas: adventurous training activities, shooting, map reading and so on. But in all they do they are laying the basis for real leadership in the sixth form.

However, by the end of the fifth form a number of cadets feel that they have reached the end of the road within the CCF: there is a wide and diverse range of activities on offer in the sixth form, and it is right that there should be so. Not everyone is cut out to be a chief, and the pyramid of numbers in the CCF ensures that all those who remain into the sixth form can take on real responsibility.
