Hockey

Master-in-Charge:      Mr Jonathan Arscott

Lent Term

Hockey is the school's major sport in the Lent Term.  All boys are encouraged to play some hockey in their first year at the school whether it be in school teams or inter house competitions.  The school fields up to 21 hockey teams on a Saturday and endeavours to provide competitive matches for all boys.

Tonbridge has some of the finest hockey facilities in the country with two floodlit water-based astros and a third sand based astroturf pitch.  This means that all boys play hockey on astroturf every week.  The Sports and Media Centre provides fantastic indoor hockey facilities.

The facilities are used by many outside clubs such as Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells, both of whom run Junior sessions at the school each week. Tonbridge is an England Hockey accredited Junior Regional Performance Centre and Kent County Hockey Association use the school's training facilities.  The full England Men’s team recently trained at the school.

In 2011, Tonbridge pupil Will Furlong was selected to play for the England Under 16 team and many pupils play representative hockey and are part of the EHB "single system". In 2009 Tonbridge 1st XI were Kent County champions, South of England regional champions and National Under 18 semi finalists. The Under 15 side were Kent Cup winners in 2009 (and 2008) and runners up in 2010. In 2010 the Under 16 XI were Kent County winners. The 2010 and 2011 1st XI side both qualified for the National Schools Cup by being finalists in the Kent County Cup.

Several boys have achieved County representation at their age group level and many boys go on to play the highest standard of University and club hockey. Old Boy Hockey provides a lasting link with the school for an increasing number as the OTHC continues to grow.
