The Hillside Award

The scheme in summary

  • A succession of places at Hillside for boys who will clearly benefit from the experience.
  • Parents or guardians will be means-tested and fee remission will be up to 100% - a little less than this where at all possible, as we believe some financial commitment to a child's education engenders a greater sense of ownership.
  • Candidates must show passion and potential. They must also be able to contribute to the life of the House (the aim of the scheme is a two-way benefit). Selection will not be based solely on entrance exam results - the interview is a crucial element of the process.
  • The committee and Housemaster will be consulted on the field of candidates, but the final decision will rest with the Headmaster.
  • Supporters of the scheme will be acknowledged within the House.

The first in a long line of Hillside Foundationers

With success in sight, the Hillside Committee asked the school to put forward some possible Foundationer candidates.

The committee has approved the award of our first place to Joshua Cronin. Joshua started his education in a local primary school, but won a scholarship place to Holmewood House Prep School, in Langton Green, near Tunbridge Wells. Josh will join Hillside in September 2010.

Headmaster, Tim Haynes, recommends the candidate to the Hillside Foundation Award Committee.

Emma Cronin (Josh's mother):

I work as a midwife at our local hospital. I knew of Tonbridge School, of course, and often drove by, thinking that it would be wonderful if Joshua could go there one day. But I never imagined that this dream could become a reality.

The news of Josh's Hillside Foundation Award seems heaven-sent; I am just over the moon. I know how well Joshua has done, but I'm glad to say that in spite of this achievement, he keeps his feet firmly on the ground. He is 12 years old now and has a good sense of responsibility. At the moment his ambition is to be a pilot or a lawyer.

As a family, I and my parents are looking forward to getting to know Tonbridge School better, and to offering our support wherever possible.

What Josh says:

The best thing that has happened to me in my life is winning the Hillside Foundation Award. I'm just looking forward to being there and going on to achieve my dreams which include going to Oxford or Cambridge. I hope to make my mum and grandparents proud of me, as well as all those who are investing in my future.

John Cronin

Every donation counts!

We have come this far thanks to the good number of generous Old Hillsiders and parents already taking part. We'd like to push further, so that we can offer more than one place every five years. Your donation really will make a difference. (A gift of £1 a day over 5 years, with Gift Aid amounts to a total of £2340 towards the fund.)
