The Judde House Award

The Judde House Barry Orchard Award

The idea was first floated in June 2003. Now, thanks to those Old Judde Boys and parents who have already stepped forward with donations, we have our first Barry Orchard Foundationer in the House. Andrew Goodman started in September 2006 - see his report below.

The award is named after a fondly remembered, long-serving teacher and Housemaster. Click here for more information.

As to the fundraising... we are edging towards our target sum. But we still have a way to go: we need more donations. So please join the growing number of friends who are supporting this scheme.

The scheme

  • An ongoing award of a place at Judde for a boy who will clearly benefit from the experience
  • Parents or guardians will be means-tested and fee-remission will be up to 100% dependent on circumstances.
  • Candidates must show passion and potential. They must also be able to contribute to the life of the House (the aim of the scheme is a two-way benefit). Selection will not be based solely on entrance exam results - the interview is a crucial element of the process.
  • The committee and Housemaster will be consulted on the field of candidates, but the final decision will rest with the Headmaster.
  • Supporters of the scheme will be acknowledged within the House.

Finance

You can download the Judde House newsletter here.

The initial aim is to reach our target of £265,000, which will support one place at Judde House permanently, with the school paying 50% of the fees. However, this really is the minimum requirement and we would like to be able to offer more than one new place every five years. Also, we must make provision for a time when the school might not be able to provide match-funding. We hope that people committing to ongoing donations will allow us to be more generous with places, in time.

The first Barry Orchard Foundationer

Andrew Goodman (JH 2006-)

I know I'm the first Barry Orchard Foundationer and I have a lot to live up to. I am loving my time at Judde; I feel I've grown up quite a bit in the 18 months I've been here and I have some great friends. I'd like to think that lots of other guys will follow after me and enjoy everything that I am benefiting from.

Andrew Goodman, the current Barry Orchard Foundationer

Around the House Andrew enjoys boarding life to the full and he has made a number of good friends. He continues to enjoy his sport and he has been an invaluable member of the victorious junior leagues rugby team for the second year running! Overall Andrew continues to thrive at Tonbridge.

Graeme Gales, Housemaster

How you can help

We need more donations to support this scheme. If you are a friend of Judde House - an OT, parent or past parent - and you share our belief that what Judde has to offer (the independent spirit of the Country Club) is so good it should be shared a little more widely, and that this in turn will benefit the House, then please join the growing number who have given.

You can give online, download a donation form or contact the Foundation Office, Tel: +44 (0)1732 304253 or email: foundation@tonbridge-school.org.uk

Barry Orchard

Barry Orchard was a long-serving teacher and Housemaster, fondly remembered by all those who came into contact with him. Educated at Tonbridge, he returned to teach languages in 1958 after a short spell in the City and some years teaching in Suffolk, eventually becoming Housemaster of Whitworth from 1974 - 1979.

Barry Orchard, who was my tutor, made a lasting impression on me - a genuinely kind man with a wonderful sense of humour who was dedicated to the school. To name this Award scheme after him is a fitting memorial and very appropriate.

Jonathan Davie (1959-1964)

Barry Orchard was one of the best-loved Housemasters that Tonbridge has known. An immensely sensitive man, he had a wonderful way of dealing with some of the more difficult boys - at their level. He was one of life's great, eccentric characters who had a deep understanding and great sense of humour.

David Kemp (JPS 1942-1947, Housemaster 1969-1984 and Acting Headmaster 1990)
