The Second Master is a member of the Senior Management Team and thus part of a consultative process regarding whole school policy decisions. He is deputy to the Headmaster, and is responsible for the management of all aspects of pastoral care and support for staff and pupils within the school. The following list is not exhaustive but indicates the main areas of responsibility.
- Monitoring of all aspects of boarding and day pupil pastoral provision to ensure compliance with Ofsted and ISI requirements. This includes monitoring of all record-keeping in houses relating, among other things, to attendance, fire, punishments and complaints.
- Management, supervision and support of all housemasters, senior student housemasters and the Lower Master. This includes overall responsibility for all aspects of pastoral care, the appointment of assistant housemasters and house tutors, induction of new housemasters.
- Management, supervision, monitoring and support of the Medical Centre staff, the School Counsellor and all house matrons.
- Regular liaison with the Bursar, Assistant Bursar, Clerk of Works and Personnel Manager. This includes responsibility for inspection of all boarding and day houses, together with the Clerk of Works, recording these inspections and drawing together an annual report, for the Governors, on work that needs to be done.
- Support for teaching staff, conveying their views to the Headmaster and allocation of all teaching staff school accommodation. Liaising with and assisting the Director of Teaching and Learning in all aspects of induction and review of new teaching staff, and of all staff involvement in extra-curricular activities.
- Disciplining pupils and communicating with parents.
- Management and induction of School Praes.
- Development and review of all school policies and procedures relating to pastoral care. This includes Child Protection, for which he is the Designated Child Protection Co-ordinator.
- Management of the Director of Sport and all aspects of sporting provision, including an overview of fixtures.
- Liaising with JDG on the appointment, induction and management of Common Room GAP assistants.
- Initial screening of all pastoral and extra curricular budgets, and, with the Headmaster and Director of Studies, further screening of all capital bids.
- Involvement in the appointment for all new teaching staff appointments and all internal promotions.
- Planning and organising, with the Director of Studies, term dates and arrangements for the beginning and end of terms.
- Chairing the Upper School Council, the Chapel Committee, the Calendar Comittee. Membership of the Housemasters' main and separate committees, the Curriculum Review Group, the Heads of Department Committee, the Development Working Party, the Support Staff Council and any other bodies set up from time to time and impinging on the Second Master's responsibilities.
- Attendance at Governors' meetings.
