The Director of Studies is a member of the Senior Management Team and thus part of a consultative process regarding whole school policy decisions, and is responsible for the general oversight, direction, and review of all aspects of the school's academic practice and policy. The following list is not exhaustive, but indicates the main areas of responsibility:
- manager (both formally and informally, on a day-to-day basis) of the Heads of Departments.
- secretary of the Curriculum Review Group, and responsible for the agenda for Heads of Departments' Committee meetings.
- overall responsibility for the timetable (assisted by the member of staff in charge of the timetable), subject choices, and blocking arrangements for all year groups, and the production of individual timetables.
- production of all curriculum booklets for boys and parents preparatory to curricular choice.
- handling, distribution and analysis of public examination results, and re-marks.
- oversight of reports, both internal and end-of-term reports to parents.
- oversight, in conjunction with the members of staff with that particular responsibility, of the Oxbridge programme.
- responsibility, with the Director of Admissions, for external admissions to the Sixth Form.
- involvement in the interview/selection process for all new staff appointments, and all internal
- promotions.
- membership of Housemasters' Committee, Calendar Committee, and the Development Working Party.
- advisory involvement with members of staff responsible for public examinations, careers, universities, library, and ICT.
- oversee arrangement of cover for staff ill or otherwise necessarily absent.
- the development of systems to monitor and, where necessary, to seek to improve, the academic progress of boys
- to take a lead role with ISI Inspections of Tonbridge School both beforehand (SPIM) and during the inspection itself.
