Many but not all of the school's facilities are of an excellent standard. New building or major upgrades are needed in some areas whilst an effective programme of routine maintenance is vital throughout the site.
A strategic space audit has been commissioned to review use of space around the Quad and associated issues. The architect reported to the governors in May 2008 and a development plan will be published within twelve months.
Issues being considered include:
- English and MFL Departments. There are inadequacies in the teaching space for these two departments. A new classroom block is needed.
- Some refurbishment is needed for Chemistry.
- The old Gym will be vacated with the opening of the Tonbridge School Centre for sport and media.
- The Smythe Library is overcrowded and of unsuitable design.
- The offices of certain senior and bursarial staff are unsatisfactory in terms of location and access.
- Common Room. This can become overcrowded and congested.
- Old Big School and the Reception area are tired despite being areas of central importance in the school.
- When new classrooms are built for English and MFL, Dry Hill House and Old Judd will fall vacant.
- There is increasing pressure on the catering capacity of the Orchard Centre.
- Vehicular and pedestrian traffic on the site is somewhat problematic.
- The quality of the accommodation in the twelve houses is inconsistent.
