A successful and highly regarded artist has decided to give a large painting to Tonbridge School in recognition of a scholarship which he received in 1948 and in gratitude for the encouragement he received from his art teacher here.
Anthony Whishaw (MH 44-48), a Royal Academician, is now 74. He is holding a three week exhibition at the school in April and May starting today at which four huge works of art each measuring 5'8 inches by 15 feet will be exhibited along with other smaller works. The school will be able to choose one of the large paintings as a gift.
He said: "The donation of a painting to Tonbridge School is in appreciation of the Judd Award which I received from the school which enabled me to fund much of my time at the Chelsea School of Art during 1948-52. It is also in gratitude for the support and encouragement given to me by the Art Master Hervey Adams during my last two years at Tonbridge."
