Tonbridge lost the toss and were asked to bowl first on a good cricket wicket. There was always going to be some assistance for the bowlers but once in, batsmen would find scoring a lot easier. The Tonbridge opening bowlers, Howick and Hammond once again quickly settled into bowling a good probing line and length which made scoring difficult. It was an exciting early session where a couple of difficult chances were created. Howick bowled well without any luck in picking up a few early wickets as he has done in every match this season. Hammond bowled well and picked up an excellent first wicket, clean bowling their opener. Right from the start the umpires were very strict on wide calls which made it tough for the bowlers who bowled a consistent line outside off stump. The number of wides bowled unsettled our bowlers a bit but they did well to take us into lunch with Charterhouse on 115 for 5 after 31 overs. After lunch Tonbridge did very well restricting the runs and they managed to bowl Charterhouse out for 186 in the 51st over. The fielding by Tonbridge was fantastic and managed to save many runs and apply considerable pressure on the Charterhouse batsmen.

We were pleased to be chasing 186 on this wicket as it was felt a par score would have been around 220. It was going to be important to establish a good start and bat through using the entire 55 overs if necessary. The openers looked comfortable but unfortunately we lost a couple of early wickets and at 29 for 2 we needed a good partnership. Our third wicket partnership of Shales and Makepeace started to look dangerous rotating the strike well. However on 60 Makepeace was bowled by a good delivery and 4 runs later Shales got out. At 64 for 4 Charterhouse took advantage of their upper hand and we lost three more quick wickets taking us to 78 for 7 - we had lost 5 wickets in 18 runs. This left our lower order with a very difficult task. However, some disciplined and patient batting from the lower order, in particular McDonald and Hill helped us score 60 for the last two wickets before we were bowled out for 145.

This was a disappointing loss but one that we should learn from. In particular as a batting side we need to have a little more patience and take more time to get ourselves in before focusing on the run chase.
