158 All Out (42 Overs)
Brighton won by 103 runs
Brighton won the toss and elected to bat on a good batting wicket. Their opening batsmen got off to a great start punishing anything loose. The outfield was very quick so almost any shot that beat the in-fielders ran away for four. Nothing quite went our way in the morning session and their top order batted very well. Brighton reached 108 in the 18th over before Kapila captured the first wicket of the day. Lunch was taken after we had bowled 30 overs and at this stage, Brighton were 178 for 2 - both wickets that fell were to Kapila. After lunch Tonbridge played a fantastic spell of cricket to restrict Brighton to no more than 82 runs in the remaining 20 overs of their innings. All the bowlers bowled excellently and they were well supported in the field. In the context of this match, Hammond's figures of 1 for 29 off 9 overs were very good indeed.
Tonbridge set about chasing the 260 required in a very positive mode, with Howeson and Hammond running well between the wickets and maintaining the required run rate around 5 per over. It was disappointing that we lost our first wicket when we did (on 43) as the openers had created real pressure on the Brighton bowling. As so often happens in cricket we lost another wicket before adding to the score. Unfortunately we then lost wickets at a steady rate and even though all but three batsmen reached double figures, no batsman went on to make the big score that was needed to chase this total. The highest score was 27 from Howick.
This result was disappointing as the side has been playing very well in their most recent matches - in particular the excellent Cowdrey Cup match against Wellington the previous weekend.
