Harrow won by 2 wickets

Harrow won the toss and elected to field first. This was a key toss to win as the pitch was fairly green and contained a few large cracks that would cause variable bounce as the game progressed. The match was reduced to 50 overs as we started late, after minimal preparation, due to a lengthy coach journey. Harrow's opening bowlers bowled an excellent line and length right from the start and the ball was moving in the air and off the pitch. As a result the opening partnership by Howeson and Hammond of 26 off 10 overs was a good one. Unfortunately shortly after the fall of the first wicket, Hammond was run out attempting a third run. Howick and Makepeace came together at 30 for 2 and established a good partnership, although the run rate never climbed above 2.5 an over, to take us to lunch with the score on 60. At lunch we were well placed to reach a total of about 180 which was we felt would be par on this pitch. Unfortunately after lunch we lost two quick wickets - Makepeace to a good ball and Howick to a bit of bad lack. We steadily lost wickets at one end but Shales was batting very positively and when he found a partner in Kapila, we were in a position to up the scoring rate. Shales batted superbly, especially under the circumstances, to score 48 not out and he was very well supported by Kapila's 20 valuable runs at the end. This managed to push our score up to 158 and give our bowlers something to defend.

The bowling and fielding were outstanding against a confident batting side that had not lost a match all season. In the first 5 overs the guys were a little too fired up and trying too hard which resulted in a couple of loose balls being bowled. However, the bowlers quickly settled into bowling a very disciplined line and length and they were supported by some brilliant fielding. After the opening partnership of 36, we then took wickets at regular intervals to maintain the pressure on the Harrow run chase. Durell's 10 overs for 20 runs was an excellent spell of bowling to maintain the pressure. Tonbridge showed great spirit and fight in this match and it could have gone either way right up to the final ball. It was very unfortunate and tough for the boys to be on the wrong side of this one, however, they should be proud in the way they played. The fielding really highlighted this determination and team spirit. In particular Howeson was outstanding saving a good 20 runs in the field.
