Friday 20th June 2008

Tonbridge School Golf Club Tour to South Africa are hoping to visit and raise funds for Nogqwasa Primary School through the sale of a tour programme; all proceeds of the programme sales will go towards the purchase of academic and sporting equipment for the school. Please contact jan@tonbridge-school.org for more details or to purchase a copy of the programme. The Golf Club is taking a squad of 8 players to South Africa to compete in the St John's International Schools tournament this summer.

Nogqwasa Primary School is situated in the suburb of Mevana in Howick, having been established in 1941. During the 1980s, the school was adopted by the local Rotary Club which succeeded in providing meaningful assistance by way of additional classrooms, books, feeding schemes and sports and laboratory equipment. There are currently between 800 and 900 pupils at the school - numbers vary monthly - from Grade 1 to 7, all black and from underprivileged families. There are 20 teachers, meaning about 40 pupils in each classroom. School fees are 100 Rand per year, which equates to about £7.
