GCSE and A level outstanding performances
AEA Spanish (edexcel): out of 238 candidates Paul Merchant (ex WW) was among the top ten scoring candidates.
Government and Politics A Level ( edexcel): out of 3380 candidates Matthew Breedon (ex CH) was among the top ten scoring candidates.
IGCSE Chemistry (edexcel): out of 3506 candidates Ben Ko (Sc4) scored in the top ten both nationally and internationally.
IGCSE Biology (edexcel): out of 3855 candidates Ben Ko (Sc4) scored in the top ten both nationally and internationally.
IGCSE Mathematics (edexcel): out of 19,213 candidates Jeffrey Poon (FH), Benjamin Spells (Sc) and Andrew Wynn-Owen (SH) scored in the top ten marks both nationally and internationally.
GCSE Russian (edexcel): out of 1922 candidates Marat Saulebayev (PS) was amongst the top ten who achieved the highest overall marks.
GCSE Italian (edexcel): out of 2357 candidates Fergus Butler Gallie (PS), Charles Wade (PS) and Thomas Whitney (WH) were amongst those scoring the top ten marks.
Tonbridge School was awarded the 2007 Good Schools Guide A level Award for Boys taking Spanish at Advanced Extension Award at an English School and also the 2007 Good Schools Guide GCSE Award for Boys taking Chinese at AS level at an English School.
Fabian Cowdrey (WH3) was named in the England Under-15 squad which played an English Schools Cricket Association Under-16 side at Lord's in September.
Paul Lanigan (Sc) was a member of the UK Cadet Rifle Team and competed in the Jersey Rifle Championships. He became the youngest winner of the Crill Trophy which is awarded to the best aggregate score on the Thursday of the competition. He beat a strong international field, including Commonwealth Games Gold and Bronze medallists.
Paul Lanigan (Sc) competed at the Bisley Championships, with very impressive results. He came 24th out of 650 cadets and in the adult championship, against world class opposition, he is ranked 185th in the world. He has been promoted to class X, the highest classification for elite world class shooters, an amazing feat for a junior.
Alex Clarke (OH5) played football for South of England Independent Schools against Essex last month.
Various Fencing Championships have taken place this term: in the SE Section Epée and Sabre Championships held at Dulwich Tom Warrener (SH) came 6th in the U18 Epée. In the SE Section Foil Championships at Worth Tom Warrener (SH) again achieved 6th in the U18 Foil and Alex Davan Wetton (SH) came 4th plus gained a place in the National Finals
Tom Coldman (MH), Ozzie King (JH), Deeyam Patel (CH), Ollie Altendorf (HS) and
James O'Neill (MH) all made it into their respective Under 15 county cricket squads for 2009 following recent county trials.
Josh Mason (CH), Geoffrey Woodman (HS), Jonathan Leung (HS) and Ben Hui (PS) won the School's Invitational competition at West Sussex Golf Club, beating 17 other schools.
Russell Webb (FH) was nominated by Hong Kong Rugby to participate in a coaching clinic, managed by the International Rugby Academy of New Zealand at the Sport and Rugby Institute at Massey University in Palmerston North in half term.
James Estlin (WH) was one of twenty-four 14-16 year old UK students selected by the Imperial War Museum, in association with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Armistice. He wrote an essay on The Impact that the First World War had on your Community, researching Tonbridgian magazine editorials from that period.
In the recent UKMT Senior Maths Challenge (a competition taken by over 90,000 candidates in nearly 2000 schools), Tonbridge achieved 24 Gold Certificates, 23 silvers and 20 bronzes. 10 qualified for the 2nd round taken by the top 1000 students in the country. Our top 5 scorers were Keren Ma (PS) followed by Arthur Wong (Sc), Tom Warrener (SH), Deryck Chan (JH) and Wesley Mok (Sc).
Vincent Kehoe (OH) has been awarded a place in the National Youth Orchestra.
Matt Aydon (WW), Oli Colegrave (HS), Charlie Hooper (SH), Joseph McManners (Sc) and Andrew Wynn Owen (SH) were all successful in this year's Young Poet of the Year Awards. Andrew is one of the 15 specially commended winners whose work will be published in the nationally circulated anthology.
Four Novi students have been chosen to participate in the exchange programme with Christchurch Grammar School in Perth, Australia and Wanganui Collegiate School in NewZealand: James Mitchell (PH) and Thomas Leek (WW) will be going to Australia and Luke Buchanan (FH) and Marcus Ringer (OH) are off to New Zealand. We hope to be hosting two boys from each school for the summer term.
Two Third Year students, Angus Marjoribanks (WH) and Jack Curd (Sc), have been selected to spend part of the summer holiday on an exchange programme with The Lawrence School in India. This is the first year we have sent students there and two boys from India will be with us for the summer term
OT Achievements
In the 40th Anniversary International Chemistry Olympiad held in Hungary over the summer Peter Aisher (ex FH 2003-8) achieved a bronze medal. The UK team of 4 also attained two silver medals and a further bronze.
Tim Burgess (ex CH 2003-8) was a member of the GB Cadet Rifle Team on its summer tour of Canada. He captained the team in the International match against the Royal Canadian Cadet National Rifle Team, which Great Britain won by 12 points.
Edward Dickens (ex OH 2001-6) has been awarded a Senior Exhibition by Emmanuel College, Cambridge following his excellent examination performance.
Ed Halford (ex WW 2002-7) has been awarded an Open Scholarship in Chemistry at Jesus College, Oxford.
Adam Gillett (ex WH 2001-6) has been awarded a Senior Exhibition by Emmanuel College Cambridge following his excellent examination performance.
Dom Hodson (ex PH 2001-06) has been signed up by a theatrical agent in Manchester where he is about to start a second year of a drama degree. He has recently been starring in Whistle Down the Wind at The Greenwich Theatre.
Jason Little (ex Sc 1985-90) has been awarded the Military Cross for his actions in Helmand Province as a company commander with 2nd Bn the Yorkshire Regiment, between October last year and April this year.
Nicholas Wade (ex WW 2001-6) took a First in Part One of the Historical Tripos at Cambridge
James Uffindell (ex WH 2001-6) obtained a First in Part One of the Mathematics Tripos at Cambridge.
Luke Richards (ex PH 2001-06) has been chosen as one of the twelve aspiring composers selected from an international field to participate in the ASCAP Cues Next Generation of Television and Film Composers with 20th Anniversary Workshop. The Workshop gives participants a hands-on opportunity to work and learn in a professional composer's environment. This year's finalists come from seven different countries. Luke is currently undertaking a BA in Music at Nottingham.
Max Puller (ex SH 2003-8) has been appointed Organ Scholar at Manchester University commencing September 2009.
Richard Evans (Common Room) has been chosen as one of the Poetry Society's eight Teacher Trailblazers. Richard was selected from hundreds of teachers around the world who submitted class sets of poems to the Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award 2008 as he has demonstrated the highest level of dedication to teaching poetry in school.
