As we celebrate the Beijing Olympics, it somehow seems appropriate the 2008 GCSE results have smashed all previous Tonbridge School records.

The 146 boys in the 2008 year group have between them amassed a total of 840 A*s, 418 As, 159 Bs, only 23 Cs and a tiny 4 Ds. This represents a 99.7% A* to C pass rate but, perhaps more importantly as places at the top universities become more competitive, 58% of the passes were at grade A*. The previous best A* score was 45%.

This means that the average GCSE/IGCSE holding is 4A*s and 6As.

One boy holds 12 grades all at A*, five more hold 11, and a further ten boys hold 10 A*s.

These results fully justify the School's decision to switch from domestic to International GCSEs in mathematics, the sciences and English Literature, which were taken for the first time by our candidates this summer.

These successes are a testament to the hard work of the pupils and the dedication of the staff, both teaching and support.
