Amidst a vast array of extracurricular options, Chess continues to be a popular choice among boys, with the Lent Term bringing success across all year groups.
With seven wins, just two losses and a total of 14 points, the Tonbridge A team finished first in the Ivan Gromov League. Victories from Orhan (FH5), Miles (MH2), Ryan (FH5), Robert (PS1), Georgiy (PS1) and Yevgeny (JH1) secured a three-point gap over second-placed Dame Alice Owen.
The Tonbridge B team appeared set to finish their seventh place season with a win over Altrincham Grammar A, but a crucial endgame error saw the match end with honours even.
With over 100 matches played across both teams throughout the season, all of the School’s chess players are now bona fide and hold ECF Chess Ratings.
Alongside the success beyond the School gates, there was also strong competition in House Chess, where Manor House proved too strong for Judde House. Avaan (MH3), Miles (MH2), Harold (MH1), Justin (MH3) and Quentin Rumpf (MH4) secured a 4-1 victory, bringing the trophy back to Shipbourne Road.
Chess Colours were also awarded this term to Miles (MH2), Ryan (FH5), Deniz (FH2) and Dylan (JH4) for their continued dedication to the sport.
