Tonbridge nominated in the National School Theatre Awards
Tonbridge has been nominated for a National School Theatre Award (NSTAs) for its recent whole-school production of Our Country’s Good by Timberlake Wertenbaker. The School is delighted to be recognised by one of the most prestigious organisations celebrating excellence in drama, musicals, and theatre-making.
This ambitious production brought together students from Tonbridge, Hillview School for Girls, and Tonbridge Grammar School, blending local artistic talent with thoughtful historical reflection. Set in an Australian penal colony in 1788, Our Country’s Good explored themes of redemption, identity, and the transformative power of the arts. As convicts and officers united to stage The Recruiting Officer, the play revealed the complexity of human nature and the enduring capacity for hope in the face of adversity.
The staging brought the harsh realities of colonial life vividly to life, where students delivered compelling performances that captured the tensions of the period while also highlighting the resilience and humour at the heart of Wertenbaker’s work.
Reflecting on the production, Director of Theatre Gavin Bruce said, “This production honoured historical reality while foregrounding the extraordinary resilience of those who, through performance, found a way to reclaim their humanity.”
