Design, Technology and Engineering
The Design, Technology, and Engineering department offers a dynamic, challenging, and high-quality experience in technology and design. The goal is to provide engaging and relevant lessons that inspire students to complete projects to a high standard, emphasising the creation of functional, useful, and aesthetically pleasing products.
Housed in the exceptional Vere Hodge building, a purpose-built complex that brings together various disciplines including Design Technology and Engineering, Art, Music, and Computing, the department boasts excellent facilities. These facilities not only facilitate student engagement with project work but also contribute to achieving impressive results. Moreover, our commitment extends beyond the classroom to ensure that students appreciate the significance of design, technology, and engineering in their surroundings, emphasizing sustainability and aesthetics in the context of industrial design.
Our Novi curriculum is tailored to accommodate students with diverse backgrounds and levels of experience in Design Technology. It offers a broad range of skills and theoretical knowledge predominantly delivered through practical projects, aiming to inspire and engage students while providing a glimpse of what the subject entails at an examined level.
At Key Stage 4, the department offers the CIE Resistant Materials IGCSE, followed by the Eduqas Product Design course at Key Stage 5. Assessment at both stages is balanced with a 50:50 split between non-examined assessment (NEA) and summative examinations.
Renowned as one of the best-resourced departments in the country, we consistently upgrade our facilities to stay abreast of new technologies, ensuring the best possible experience for students. Recent enhancements include the acquisition of additional 3D printing machines for industry-standard prototyping and testing and a large CNC router to support manufacturing.
Our strong links with industry open exciting opportunities for students, including commercial projects with industry leaders such as Bose, Sennheiser, Huawei, and Ledlenser. Enrichment opportunities abound, with regular domestic and international trips and visits providing diverse experiences for all students.
Our international collaborations, notably with Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) in the US, have resulted in residential trips for students and placements for SCAD graduates in our department. This collaboration offers valuable insights into design and engineering careers, keeping students informed about the latest technologies and trends.
The department buzzes with activity daily, offering multiple opportunities for students to delve deeper into the subject. Extracurricular activities, including the Robotics Society, Automotive Engineering Club, and Sustainable Design, provide avenues for further exploration and engagement.
