The weekends at Tonbridge are key to supporting the ethos of the school.
For many boys the highlight of the school week will fall on Saturday, during which morning lessons are followed by major sports fixtures against other schools during the afternoon and musical performances and house or school plays in the evening. Sunday regularly plays host to school concerts and house soirees, in which members of each house will collaborate to produce evenings of huge diversity. The E.M. Forster Theatre, Big School and the Music School are often therefore a hive of activity on a Sunday as rehearsals take place for house and school productions.
All of the facilities around the school are also available for the boys’ use at weekends. The Tonbridge School Centre for Sports and Media will often play host to house competitions in the sports hall or simply an informal game of basketball, table tennis or 5-a-side football. The swimming pool is open for the boys’ use, as is the fitness centre. During November the media centre becomes particularly busy as the annual House Film Competition approaches. In the main school, the Art and Design and Technology departments are available for the boys’ use as are the Rackets, Fives and Squash courts.
In addition to these on-site activities, there are a number of excursions and events at weekends over the school year. Each first year boy is invited to join a novi camp over a weekend during their first term, featuring an overnight camp and barbecue, and Sunday morning activities ranging from paintballing to archery. On top of this, Combined Cadet Force and Duke of Edinburgh expeditions take place at weekends. Trips to watch rugby and football matches in London, to Thorpe Park or more informal trips to London are also common.
Finally, we have established strong links with Benenden and often take part in combined activities. As well as large year group socials, Tonbridge boarding houses are twinned with those at Benenden and organise smaller, year group activities. These include summer term sailing and barbeque days, joint meals in Tunbridge Wells restaurants, and sporting days either at Tonbridge or Benenden.
