Boys raise more than £25,000 for West Kent Mind and Porchlight
Nurturing an idea of service and care for both the people around them and the world in which the boys live is a fundamental element of education at Tonbridge.
Tonbridge is very much part of its local community and the school’s Community Action group (TCA) has established a programme of opportunities for boys and staff to engage with the local and wider community in a variety of ways, through weekly placements on a Wednesday afternoon in local special and primary schools, care homes and other institutions, or by hosting members of those communities in activities on our site.
Recent initiatives have seen the boys working with asylum seekers who are waiting to see if their applications to gain residency in the UK have been successful. Our Science for Schools project has seen hundreds of local primary school children begin their journey into the scientific world: Tonbridge boys and staff have hosted their visits over a three-week period, presenting pupils with new and exciting opportunities to learn.
Additionally, the school has dedicated days in the calendar set aside for fundraising for charities, including Child Action Lanka, with whom the school has been in partnership since 2013.
Our Whole School Community Day is one of the most important days in the school’s calendar, when large numbers of primary school pupils and others take part in over 30 activities taught, coached and hosted by the Novi (first year) and Lower Sixth boys on site. Second and third year boys are often offsite, either raising money via a sponsored walk, serving the community in 'green' initiatives or working in partnership with the Marsh Academy. A thriving Conservation group, a Green committee, and our partnership with The Marsh Academy, in addition to our TCA group, all provide avenues for the boys to engage with Social Responsibility and develop the core values which are so important in today’s and tomorrow’s world.
More than 700 boys and 70 staff joined together in Tonbridge School’s inaugural Colour Run around the school’s sports fields.
The event, part of the Head Boy’s charity day, raised a fantastic £4,500 for Child Action Lanka, the school’s partner charity in Sri Lanka.
