Angus (PS4)
Maths, Physics, Design, Technology & Engineering and Theatre Studies
What’s been the highlight of your time so far at Tonbridge?
“I’ve really enjoyed being part of CCF, playing rugby and performing on stage. But our annual Giving Day is my highlight, as it is so amazing to see the whole school community come together to support others.”
What subjects are you choosing for A Level and why?
“I have chosen Maths, Physics and Design, Technology & Engineering as I’d like to apply for Mechanical Engineering at university. I’ve also chosen Theatre Studies as my fourth option as it is my favourite subject, and I believe it teaches many valuable life skills including public speaking.”
What are you most looking forward to about being in Sixth Form?
“I’m most looking forward to being able to focus on the subjects I have the most passion for and studying them in greater depth. I’m also looking forward to the opportunity to apply for wider leadership roles.”
James (PH4)
Chemistry, Mathematics, Geography and an EPQ
What’s been the highlight of your time so far at Tonbridge?
“Whilst I’ve got several highlights, there are two stand-out moments:
One was trekking across the South Downs as part of my Duke of Edinburgh expedition. Despite facing challenging conditions, including strong winds and heavy rain, the experience was incredibly rewarding. When the weather cleared, the views were exceptional, making the effort worthwhile. Navigating using maps and occasionally seeking directions from locals, our group demonstrated resilience and teamwork to successfully reach our destination.
Another key highlight has been the opportunity to captain my U16 football team. Leading the team throughout the season was both a privilege and a valuable learning experience, allowing me to develop my leadership, communication skills, and a sense of responsibility. Overall, it was a successful and enjoyable season, and one I look back on with great pride.”
What subjects are you choosing for A Level and why?
“I have chosen Chemistry, Mathematics and Geography. I particularly enjoy the problem-solving aspects of Mathematics and Chemistry, as well as the broader, real-world relevance of Geography, in an increasingly interconnected and yet damaged world.
Together, these subjects provide a well-rounded academic combination that I believe will both challenge me and support my future aspirations. I am looking forward to studying them in greater depth and developing a more advanced understanding.”
Do you know what you would like to do for further study?
“With my GCSEs coming to an end, I am still considering my options for further study. However, I am currently drawn towards pursuing a degree in environmental science or engineering. Both fields appeal to me due to their practical applications and their importance in addressing global challenges, particularly those related to sustainability and the environment. I hope that my A Level choices will help me refine my interests and guide me towards a more definite decision in the future.
I am aspiring to apply to the University of Cambridge. I am drawn to its academic excellence, rigorous approach to learning and the opportunity to study alongside highly motivated peers. While I recognise the level of competition, it is a goal that motivates me to work hard and achieve my full potential.”
What are you most looking forward to about being in Sixth Form?
“In addition to being able to focus on the subjects that I’m most passionate about, I am excited about the prospect of participating in senior sports.
Sixth Form also represents a step towards greater independence and responsibility, which I am eager to embrace as I continue my academic journey.
Furthermore, the Chan Café will add motivation for me to go to the library to revise more! I also hope to advance to the Symphony Orchestra with my cello!”
Daniel (MH4)
English, RS, History, German and an EPQ
What’s been the highlight of your time so far at Tonbridge?
“There have been many enjoyable moments during my three years at Tonbridge – from canoeing on the River Medway and learning to scuba dive through the CCF, to scoring in a 1st XI cricket match on the Head.
But, if you were to press me on my most memorable moment, it would be listening to Dr Reid’s brilliant talk in Chapel about the School’s connection to the Second World War, followed by experiencing Mad Rush by Phillip Glass beautifully played on the Marcussen organ the week after.”
What subjects are you choosing for A Level and why?
“English, RS, History and German. I find the Humanities fascinating and deeply rewarding. I feel very fortunate to be taught by some of the best teachers in the School who are hugely passionate about their subject and take learning beyond the strict confines of mark schemes.
I’m interested in pursuing a degree in Law. I’m aiming for a Russell Group university, and particularly Oxbridge.”
What are you most looking forward to about being in Sixth Form?
“I am looking forward to studying the subjects that I am passionate about in greater depth and in smaller groups. I am also looking forward to pushing myself in fencing and shooting, as well as more opportunities to take part in House competitions.”
Paul (MH4)
Theatre Studies, RS, English, Maths and an EPQ
What’s been the highlight of your time so far at Tonbridge?
“I enjoyed performing as Captain Hook in front of a large audience in the Junior Production of Peter Pan last year, and I was grateful for the opportunity and to all the people I met in the process.
I also enjoyed participating in the final of the Floyd Reading Prize when I was in the Novi. It was a rewarding experience and an opportunity to develop my public speaking skills.”
What subjects are you choosing for A Level and why?
“I will be studying Theatre Studies, RS, English and Maths with the intention of going on to study Law. I chose this combination as I believe Drama, English and RS share a useful synergy for Law, and that Maths will allow me to branch into other aspects of the field, such as Corporate and Commercial Law, Tax Law and Investment Banking.”
What are you most looking forward to about being in Sixth Form?
“I am excited for the chance to learn more in-depth about the subjects that interest me. The introduction of free periods will also allow me to study independently and focus on super-curricular activities, such as creative writing, which I greatly enjoy.”
William (CH4)
Latin, Greek, English and Music
What’s been the highlight of your time so far at Tonbridge?
I feel that the range of experiences which you can take part in at Tonbridge is so diverse that it is difficult to pinpoint one specific highlight. From getting to one of the highest ranked rooms at a national level debate competition (despite only being a relative beginner) to performing the on organ in chapel, I’ve had range of opportunities.
Most recently, I’ve re-founded the School’s official Debate Union. The first event involving both staff and students in the historic Skinner’s Library was a particularly special highlight for me.
What subjects are you choosing for A Level and why?
I will be studying Latin and Greek, as well as English and Music. I find discovering about ancient societies fascinating and relish the opportunity to discover more through studying deeper into their languages. I also love to play Early Music on the harpsichord and organ, so I am excited to learn more about the development of music throughout history.
Beyond School, I am torn between English and Classics for further study. I have always wanted to study Classics, and more recently to go on and do Aegean Archaeology as part of that, but I have been enjoying learning about literature so much lately too.
I will definitely aim for a Russell Group university, probably Cambridge, because I want to study to a very high level whilst also having the opportunity to sing in a college choir.
What are you most looking forward to about being in Sixth Form?
I am looking forward to studying subjects that really interest me in greater depth and enjoy more time to learn and study independently. I’ve also heard that the Chan Café is very good as well, so I will look forward to some barista coffee whilst I study!
Josh (WW4)
Latin, Greek, English and Music
What’s been the highlight of your time so far at Tonbridge?
There have been so many memories at Tonbridge that it’s hard to pick just one, but if I had to, it would be my long linguistic adventure of learning Spanish.
The trip to Valencia was a real standout for me. Every aspect of it was incredible, seeing the Spanish culture, eating Spanish food, and having the chance to stay with a Spanish host family was truly memorable. Experiencing school in Spain was amazing and seeing myself improve was the most satisfactory feeling.
What subjects are you choosing for A Level and why?
I have enjoyed so many subjects at Tonbridge that I am still struggling to pinpoint and finalise my A Level choices. I will be taking Maths, Further Maths, and Chemistry to achieve my dream of a career in STEM. For my 4th subject, I’m still deciding between History, Politics, and Theatre Studies. The A Level courses are interesting in all of these subjects, and I have enjoyed studying their respective GCSEs, which makes it hard to choose just one.
For future study, I hope to pursue a STEM based degree. For location, after discovering options for international universities at Tonbridge, I am eager to study in the US, yet I am still exploring university options in the UK.
What are you most looking forward to about being in Sixth Form?
I’m looking forward to the increased responsibility we are given in the Sixth Form. I hope to improve my time management and ability to self-study, as these are important skills that I will carry beyond School.
