Geographers explore the volcanic landscapes of the Azores
Third Year and Lower Sixth pupils recently travelled to the Azores for the School’s inaugural Geography trip to the Portuguese archipelago.
Exploring three of the nine volcanic islands, the group trekked around lake-filled calderas and fumarolic fields, and followed dramatic stretches of coastline. Their journey took them through landscapes of green pastures and blue hydrangeas, beneath the imposing presence of Mount Pico, Portugal’s highest mountain.
Alongside exploring the islands’ distinctive physical geography, pupils took part in canyoning and e-bike rides, with opportunities to relax in the Azores’ thermal springs.
The trip offered pupils the chance to experience the islands’ remarkable volcanic landscapes first-hand, bringing their geographical studies to life.
