Beyond performance: Cowdrey Scholars develop leadership and character
This term has seen a significant strengthening of the Cowdrey Scholar programme, with an increasing emphasis not just on their sporting performance, but on developing well-rounded sportsmen who understand leadership, preparation, wellbeing and their responsibility to others.
All Cowdrey Scholars now take part in dedicated early-morning strength and conditioning sessions with our Head of Athletic Development. The focus goes well beyond building strength: scholars are learning about movement, recovery, stretching, rest and the habits that underpin long-term athletic development. This complements the wider individual support available to scholars and specialist guidance on nutrition and recovery.
In addition, during the Sports Leadership Programme on Wednesday afternoons, scholars have trained as football referees and taken part in practical nutrition sessions, planning, preparing and cooking meals designed to support performance and recovery. They are also developing their leadership through coaching masterclasses at local prep schools, giving them the opportunity to share their expertise, communicate with younger pupils and become positive sporting role models.
Over the coming months, the programme will develop further. Scholars will officiate prep-school football, rugby and hockey matches and support younger sporting talent. They are also planning and delivering their own sports competition, giving them first-hand experience of everything from health and safety and logistics to organisation and leadership. It is an excellent way for them to understand how much sits behind a successful sporting event, while giving them genuine responsibility for making it happen.
This growing culture of leadership and service extends beyond the scholarship group, including our 1st XI footballers delivering sessions at Cumnor House Sussex, while three others acted as hares at the Somerhill Schools cross-country event. We are also looking forward to pupils supporting the forthcoming IAPS cross-country event.
Taken together, these opportunities reflect what we want the Cowdrey programme to stand for: sporting excellence alongside character, leadership and contribution. We aim for our scholars to not only fulfil their potential, but to be equipped with the confidence, knowledge and sense of responsibility to make a positive difference to sport at Tonbridge and in the wider community.
