Co-curricular Sport

Sport

Sport is an integral part of life at Tonbridge School. We offer top-tier facilities, expert coaching, and a ‘sport for all’ ethos. Your son will develop skills, confidence and a lifelong passion for activity, alongside academic excellence.

We strive for excellence, but enjoyment, health, opportunity, participation, support and wellbeing are at the heart of the sporting programme.

Tonbridge is renowned for its sporting excellence, not just for producing international, county, and professional athletes, but also for fostering a lifelong passion for sport among our pupils.

We recognise sport as a powerful tool for developing key soft skills that will future proof our students, with a focus on:

    • Teamwork
    • Resilience
    • Leadership

At Tonbridge, sport instils responsibility, perseverance, self-discipline, and the ability to handle failure, skills essential for responsible citizenship. Our philosophy emphasises winning with humility and losing with grace, creating an inclusive, competitive, and transformative environment.

A distinctive feature of our sports programme is the full involvement of our academic teaching staff, who are adept at getting the best out of pupils and fostering mutually beneficial relationships that extend beyond the sports field and into the classroom. This approach deepens the connections between pupils and teachers, enhancing both sporting and academic performance, making the Tonbridge environment truly unique.

Our academic staff are supplemented by top-tier professional coaches and our dedicated rugby, hockey, and cricket academies, ensuring comprehensive, year-round support. With experience at the highest levels, our coaches keep Tonbridge sport at the forefront of coaching developments and maintain close ties with leading professional clubs and national governing bodies such as Saracens RFC, Harlequins RFC, Kent CC, Surrey CC, and England Hockey.

Games programme, structure and philosophy

At Tonbridge, we believe in encouraging pupils to participate in as many sports as possible for as long as possible. This variety keeps them engaged and promotes well-rounded athletic development. A multidisciplinary approach enhances physical literacy, reduces the risk of overuse injuries, and helps students discover new passions. We also recognise that some pupils may require more tailored programmes to pursue excellence in their chosen sport, and we work closely with individuals to support their specific goals.

One of Tonbridge’s greatest strengths is the depth of our sports provision. We offer a wide range of sports, and our ‘club’ system ensures that boys of all abilities can take part and compete. For example, we field up to 30 rugby and football teams in the Michaelmas Term, and a similar number of hockey and football teams in the Lent Term. The Summer Term includes teams in cricket, tennis, and athletics, giving students year-round opportunities to engage in a variety of sports and avoid monotony. Across the range of sports, boys play fixtures throughout the year against local, regional and international teams.  Further details about upcoming fixtures can be viewed here.

Our House Leagues system, alongside traditional House Matches, ensures that all boys, regardless of ability, can represent their House and enjoy competitive sport, fostering a strong sense of belonging within the Tonbridge community.

Explore our sports offering

With over 20 different sports on offer, including athletics, badminton, basketball, cross-country, fencing, football, hockey, rugby, swimming, tennis, and more, pupils are encouraged to explore a range of activities that build transferable skills such as teamwork, resilience, and leadership.

These opportunities are supported by world-class facilities. Our Sports Centre, completed in 2008, provides national-standard indoor amenities alongside 100 acres of meticulously maintained outdoor fields, three AstroTurf pitches, and an all-weather athletics track. Tonbridge’s facilities have been recognised internationally when the school hosted the Australian Track and Field team for the 2012 London Olympics and the 2016 World Championships and in June 2024, the West Indian Cricket Team came for Test Match training.
