Tonbridge School Receives Rare Accolades in ISI Inspection Report

Tonbridge School is delighted to announce the results of its recent inspection by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI), which highlights the School’s exceptional standards across all areas of provision.

The October inspection assessed Tonbridge against five areas of standards, all of which were met. Under the new ISI framework, the accolade of “significant strength” is a rare distinction that is awarded if it demonstrates a clear, measurable, and profoundly positive impact on pupils. Tonbridge is proud to have been recognised as having not one but two major strengths in the educational experience which benefits the pupils.

The report identified the School’s academic provision as a significant strength. Inspectors highlighted the excellence of the School’s Sixth Form curriculum and the academic enrichment it provides, delivering outstanding results at A-level and progression to world-class universities and careers.

Mark Weatheritt, Deputy Head, Academic said: “Our curriculum is carefully designed to offer a flexible, personalised learning journey for each pupil. It actively encourages them to explore their passions, find their niche, and excel—and we’ve seen this translate into boys achieving some of the best A-level results in the country. We’re thrilled that ISI has recognised this as a significant strength of the School, reinforcing our commitment to achieving the very best outcomes for our boys.”

The inspectors also singled out for praise the development of the boys’ confidence, communication, and leadership skills through the School’s programme of wider community engagement. Many of these initiatives are pupil-led, reflecting the School’s ethos of empowering boys to make a difference both within and beyond the School.

Kat Portman, Director of Community Engagement, said: “We have developed our Community Partnerships and projects over many years and are delighted that the impact has been recognised by the ISI at the highest level. Our partnerships with schools, community groups and charities allow for real collaboration, creativity and mutual benefit.”

Tonbridge’s Headmaster, James Priory, expressed his pride in the report’s findings:

“As the report shows Tonbridge really does develop Fine Minds and Good Hearts thanks to the dedication to innovation in our teaching, the breadth of our curriculum and the transformative power of co-curricular activities, such as sport, music and drama. It also acknowledges the care with which we safeguard and support our pupils’ wellbeing, ensuring they leave us not just as scholars but as compassionate, confident and responsible citizens of the world.”

The School extends its thanks to pupils, parents, staff, and governors for their contributions to this outstanding outcome.
