Boys make it a golden year in Chemistry Olympiad

Tonbridge boys performed to an extremely high standard in the latest UK Chemistry Olympiad, a national competition which tests students’ knowledge and problem-solving skills.

The Upper Sixth recorded a total of eight gold and nine silver awards, as well as one bronze. A gold award is given for achieving a place in the top eight per cent of more than 9,000 students taking part.

While the Chemistry Olympiad is aimed mainly at the Upper Sixth, there was unprecedented interest from Tonbridge’s Lower Sixth and Year 11 boys, who also put in fine performances. The Lower Sixth achieved two gold, 10 silver and 20 bronze medals, and five Year 11 boys were awarded bronze.

Ishmael Roslan, Head of Chemistry, said: “The boys can be very proud of their success and the results also show the hard work of the Department to engage our students. Receiving an award in the Lower Sixth and Year 11 represents an especially impressive achievement and this bodes well for the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge – Lower Sixth (C3L6).”
