Tonbridge School U14 Hockey Team Finishes as Runners-Up in Kent County Tournament

Tonbridge School’s U14 hockey team secured an impressive second-place finish in the Kent County Tournament, held at Holcombe Hockey Club on Wednesday, participating against 11 schools in this highly competitive event.

The team began their campaign with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Sutton Valence School. They followed with a 1-0 victory over St Edmund’s School before suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat to Simon Langton Grammar School. Undeterred, the boys responded, securing a 3-0 win against Skinners’ School and a commanding 5-0 victory over Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School.

Finishing as runners-up in the group stage, Tonbridge faced the winners of the opposing group, The Harvey Grammar School, in the semi-final. Both sides created chances, but the game ended goalless, leading to a penalty shootout. Holding their nerve under pressure, the boys secured a 3-2 victory to advance to the final.

The final saw a rematch against Simon Langton Grammar School, with neither side able to break the deadlock, the match was decided by penalty strokes. Unfortunately, Tonbridge fell short, losing 2-0 and finishing as silver medallists.

Master in Charge of Hockey, Kieron Walsh, commented: “In a tournament showcasing some outstanding hockey from all participating teams, I am incredibly proud of our boys’ performance, particularly given that they have only been playing together for a few weeks. Their skill, determination, and resilience were evident throughout, and this achievement is a testament to their hard work.”

The team will now represent Kent in the regional finals, set to take place in St George’s School in March.
