About Only
Connect

Only
Connect

When Tonbridge alumnus EM Forster wrote in Howards End, ‘Only Connect’, he was encouraging the reader to make the connection between the head and the heart, between thought and feelings.

Only connect the prose and the passion, and both will be exalted, and human love will be seen at its height. Live in fragments no longer.

EM Forster, Howards End Class of 1897

Our aim is to help every boy forge the connection between head and heart. Here, we build connections between people, ideas, talents and enthusiasms. In this way, we encourage the boys to make their own connections as they continue their journey through Tonbridge and beyond. Only then, so EM Forster’s argument goes, can we live a life of purpose and become a force for good.

This is brought to life through four connecting themes that shape every aspect of our community.

Connecting imaginations and inspiring learning

At Tonbridge, we nurture the connection between knowledge and understanding through inspirational teaching and learning.

Our pupils and staff develop a strong rapport thanks to the enthusiasms and experiences they share. Ideas and imaginations, once connected in the classroom, are extended through super0curricular exploration, helping each boy discover an intrinsic love of learning. The results and accomplishments they achieve speak for themselves.

Connecting people and creating communities.

We believe that pupils find strength when they feel inextricably connected to the people and the world around them. Our boarding ethos, House system, and pastoral care, go hand in hand with outstanding community engagement and partnership. Our boys flourish by believing in themselves, supporting each other and by contributing creatively to the wider community.

Connecting passions and developing purpose.

At Tonbridge, we help every pupil to forge the connection between passion and purpose  because we know that’s when extraordinary things happen.

Every day offers breadth and depth of opportunities in activities such as sport, music, drama and outdoor education. By discovering new interests, developing experience in leadership and teamwork, and learning to enjoy rounded, purposeful lives, our boys grown as people.

Connecting opportunities and discovering futures.

We believe it is never too early to think about the future.

Outstanding universities and careers advice ensures that our pupils are well-equipped to navigate the global opportunities available. As university destinations beyond Tonbridge continue to multiply and expand, we support our boys in being ambitious about their futures and imaginative about the roles that they will play as global citizens.
