Intermediate Maths Challenge record

The school has achieved a total of 67 gold medals in the latest Intermediate Maths Challenge – making this its best ever result in the competition.

Organised by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust, challenges are lively and intriguing multiple-choice question papers, which are designed to stimulate interest in maths in large numbers of pupils. The competition attracts over 600,000 entries from some 4,000 schools and colleges.

The intermediate challenge is open to pupils from Year 11 and below. Question papers are taken in school on a set date and returned to the UKMT for marking.

Eleven Tonbridge boys qualified for the follow-up Olympiad round, due to being placed in the top 500 in their year group across the whole country. The Olympiad round takes place in mid-March and sets more advanced challenges for talented mathematicians.

Top in each year were Kevin Lee (MH3), Sherman Yip (HS2) and Kenneth Lee (MH1).

Ian Jackson, the school’s Head of Mathematics, said: “These excellent results typify the hard work that goes on in the department. However, most of the credit must go to the boys themselves, who have worked extremely hard to set a new record for the school, and can be very proud of their achievements.”
