Boys land place in rocketry finals

Two Tonbridge teams have powered their way to the national finals of the UK Youth Rocketry competition.

Their mission was to launch two eggs to a height of exactly 800 feet, and then to recover the eggs safely 43 seconds later.

The competition received more than 120 entries from across the country, with only 20 teams being chosen to progress to the finals.

Freddie Lacey (PS1) and Cameron Dymond (OH1) were members of team ‘Rocketon’. The other team, ‘Pyongyang Rockets Ltd’, consisted of Takuya Boehringer (FH2), Toby Harrison (WW2), Ben Gardner (CH2) and Thomas Masding (OH2). Both will compete in the national finals, taking place in Buckminster, Grantham later in May.

Chris Powell, Physics Teacher at Tonbridge, said: “The boys worked really hard throughout recent months to prepare their rockets, and they carried out a number of test firings on the lower fields. They should be rightly impressed with their achievements, and they are all looking forward to the finals.”

The competition challenges young people aged between 11 and 18 to design, build and launch a model rocket which must then carry a fragile load. Students combine practical experience with the chance to learn more about maths and science, while the UK winners have the chance to compete against teams from France, USA and Japan at an international event.
