Boys put design skills to the test in DTE challenge

Tonbridge boys’ technical skills were on display as they battled it out in the annual Design Technology and Engineering Inter-House Challenge.

Teams of four were set the task of designing their own ‘Marble Run’ mechanism, with points awarded for the quality of their work and for the originality of their approach. Points were also given for the time it took a marble a roll its way through the boys’ creations: the longer the marble run, the more successful the device.

A minimum of two students per team came from either the Novi, 2nd or 3rd Years, ensuring that all teams represented a range of ages and skill levels.

After an exciting and close-fought contest, Ferox Hall were crowned as winners, with School House second and Welldon House third.

The school’s Headmaster, James Priory, was among the judges, and helped to score the boys’ efforts for innovation and entertainment.

Richard Day, Head of Design, Technology and Engineering, said: “The competition was about teamwork as well as creativity. It was wonderful to see boys working together to a strict time limit and producing some interesting and, at times, quite ingenious contraptions. I was also pleased to see them having so much fun along the way, and I was very impressed with their response to this design challenge.”
