Top placing for boys in Intermediate Maths Olympiad

Tonbridge boys have achieved excellent results in the Intermediate Maths Olympiad, a national competition which tests some of the country’s top pupils.
Organised by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT), maths challenges consist of multiple-choice questions which are designed to stimulate interest in the subject among large numbers of pupils. They attract entries from thousands of schools and colleges across the country.
The Intermediate Maths Olympiad is a further test for students who were placed in the top 500 in their year group across the whole country, following the Intermediate Maths Challenge.
Five Tonbridge boys, pictured, received a medal and a Certificate of Distinction for finishing in the national top 100 in their year group. They are Hayden Lam (FH1), Kenneth Lee (MH2), Kiefer Chow (MH3), Ben Gardner (CH3) and Sherman Yip (HS3). Sherman was one of just a handful of entrants to score full marks in his paper.
In addition, three other boys achieved outstanding results in the Intermediate Maths Kangaroo this year, also set by the UKMT. Frederick Ogilvie (HS1), Thomas Gardner (CH1) and Thomas Masding (OH3) performed extremely well, with Thomas achieving the rare distinction of full marks.
Ian Jackson, Head of Mathematics, said: “These are highly impressive results in both competitions. To have five students in the top 100 in their year group at the same school shows that Tonbridge is one of the top schools for Mathematics. These outcomes speak volumes for the boys’ dedication and hard work, and for the high-quality teaching and support they receive at Tonbridge.”
