Tonbridge boys win Arkwright Engineering Scholarships

Lower Sixth boys James Goh (MH4) and Ernest Ng (FH4) have both won a renowned Arkwright Scholarship.

The most prestigious award of its type in the UK, an Arkwright Scholarship has the aim of inspiring and nurturing school-age students to be the country’s future leaders of the engineering profession. They are awarded to high-calibre, 16-year-olds following a rigorous selection process, and support the recipients throughout the full two years of their A-levels.

During their IGCSE studies in the school’s Design, Technology and Engineering Department, James and Ernest gained valuable experience in engineering processes and problem-solving. Their coursework projects also provided an impressive talking point at interview.

Each Arkwright Scholarship is sponsored by a commercial company. James is being sponsored by the Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers and Ernest is being sponsored by the Arkwright Benefactors Trust.

The companies offer support in various ways, including valuable hands-on work experience, advice on curriculum projects and the allocation of a personal mentor, who can help with aspects of studies and career planning.

Head of Department Richard Day was delighted with the boys’ success. “It is very pleasing to see two more Tonbridgians being awarded the Arkwright Scholarship,” he said. “This is an outstanding achievement and I am confident that both James and Ernest will one day become leaders in their chosen field of engineering.”

Both boys have also been awarded Post GCSE Honorary Academic Scholarships by the school.
