Tonbridge Sixth Former selected for prestigious Physics summer school

Tonbridge Lower Sixth student Adrian Lam has been awarded a place on a highly selective science summer school run by the University of Cambridge.

Adrian (JH4) has qualified for the Senior Physics Challenge, a three-day programme for Year 12 pupils from across the country. Just 50 places are available and, to be successful, students must complete more than 800 questions on the ‘Isaac Physics’ platform, which are often well beyond the A-level syllabus in terms of complexity.

Students are invited to attend based on their problem-solving ability and their commitment to, and interest in, the subject.

This is the fifth consecutive year in which at least one Tonbridge boy has gained a place on the Senior Physics Challenge, which this year returns to an ‘in person’, residential event following its move online in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid.

The summer school will be held at the University of Cambridge between Monday 4 and Thursday 7 July, and will include problem-solving workshops in Quantum Mechanics, inspiring Physics lectures and social events.

Chris Powell, Tonbridge’s Head of Physics, said: “I am delighted Adrian has won a place on this highly competitive and prestigious course. It is a testament not only to his natural curiosity, which means he has read widely beyond the syllabus, but also to his tenacity in completing so many questions.”
