Golden generation finish with Cowdrey Cup win

Tonbridge’s 1st XI was victorious in this year’s Cowdrey Cup, an annual competition which features many of the top schools in the South East (namely Tonbridge, Charterhouse, Wellington, Eton, Radley and Harrow).

During its Cup campaign, the 1st XI recorded highly impressive away wins against Eton and Harrow, and finished with two home wins against Wellington and Radley to take the trophy.

The side was unbeaten during the Cowdrey Cup, and lost just one match during the entire season.

Rob Stephen, Master in Charge of Cricket, said: “The Cup win was a great reward for the team’s fantastic effort and spirit. It was also a lovely note on which to bid farewell to our talented Upper Sixth boys, many of whom contributed to the U15s National Cup win a few years ago and reached the National T20 finals day last year.”

Heartening news for the School is that nearly half of this winning side will be returning for the next season, with Ollie Sykes (HS4), who won the batting prize, scoring more than 900 runs, and Callum Porritt (Sc4), who won the bowling prize, having taken over 40 wickets.

Sam Hadfield (FH5), this year’s 1st XI skipper, bows out with a total of three Cowdrey Cup wins. Sam has played for the first team throughout his five years at Tonbridge and has missed just one Cowdrey Cup game during that time.

Also promising for Tonbridge cricket is that the U14s side completed a hugely successful first season together by winning the Kent Cup. Coach Rupert Scarratt said: “The boys worked extremely hard this season and their performance in the final was a fitting culmination. They put in a commanding batting performance, reinforced by some fantastic bowling and fielding.

“The U14s fully deserve their success and will be an exciting prospect in the National Cup next year.”
