School’s OBS Gallery stages Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition

100 award-winning images will be on display at the School in September as the OBS Gallery hosts the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition.

On loan from the Natural History Museum, London, the show features a range of stunning photography as selected by an international panel of experts. More than 50,000 entries were sent in from all around the world for this year’s competition.

The exhibition, which includes an accompanying video, opens on Friday 16 September and runs until Sunday 6 November. Entry is free and the exhibition is open to the public between 12pm and 4pm most weekends.

Visitors can take part in self-guided Gallery Trails and schools can book a special guided tour.

A Family ‘Drop-In’ Workshop, also a free event, will take place between 12pm and 4pm on Sunday 9 October in Big School, next door to OBS Gallery.

Over Half Term we will be open to the public every day, 12-4pm, from Saturday 22 October all the way through to Sunday 30 October.

Visitors are asked to check the EM Forster Theatre www.emftheatre.com website for any changes to opening times.

On the evening of Thursday 3 November, Henley Spiers, an award-winning underwater photographer, writer and expedition leader, will be the speaker for the School’s Art Talk. This is a free but bookable event via the School’s EM Forster Theatre.

To arrange a weekday school visit during the exhibition, please contact the Gallery Administrator.

The origins of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition go back to 1965, when BBC Wildlife Magazine was called Animals and the three available categories attracted around 600 entries. Even then, it was the leading event of its kind for nature photographers. It grew in stature over the years and, in 1984, the competition as it is known today was created. Wildlife Photographer of the Year is now solely owned by the Natural History Museum.

The awards ceremony takes place in October, broadcast live from the Museum’s Hintze Hall, during which the overall winner of Wildlife Photographer of the Year will be announced.
