‘A wonderful few days of golf’ as Tonbridge team awarded treble honours
Tonbridge’s golfers had tremendous recent success in the West Sussex Invitational and Smarden Bell golf tournaments, winning both of these highly competitive events which involve numerous schools.
The Smarden Bell tournament, held at Chart Hills Golf Club in Biddenden, Kent, had the strongest field of golfers yet assembled across the eight competing schools of Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Cranleigh, Eastbourne, Epsom, Dulwich, Reigate and King’s Canterbury.
It was a hugely impressive achievement by Edward Greenslade (captain, OH5), William Lacey (PH5), Charlie Tuffield (SH5), Jack Kirkland (JH4) and Justin Zhao (MH2) to win the team event.
Edward made it a clean sweep for Tonbridge at the tournament with his victory in the individual event, finishing with the lowest individual score among all 40 golfers taking part.
Shortly before the Smarden Bell, the golfers – on this occasion a four-man team, with Edward, William, Jack and Justin – won the West Sussex Invitational schools tournament.
This established competition brings together many scratch golfers together from 18 leading schools including Wellington, Epsom, Eton, Radley, Harrow, Charterhouse, Brighton, Eastbourne and Westminster.
Keith Froggatt, Master in Charge of Golf, said: “We have seen a wonderful few days of competitive golf for the School, winning the West Sussex Invitational trophy for only the second time, and then completing that clean sweep at the Smarden Bell.
“It’s certainly ‘well done’ to the two teams, but this success is also due to the way in which other golfers in the group are competing for places and pushing up standards – while never losing the sense of fun.”
