Yachting Expedition Sets Sail

Eight boys from the Third Year and above set sail from Gosport on a 43ft yacht, with the ambitious goal of reaching the Isles of Scilly. After the 2023 expedition was cancelled due to unseasonably strong storms, Tonbridge’s yachting team eagerly returned to the water this summer.

The journey began with a stunning upwind sail into the sunset, and instead of pausing in Yarmouth as planned, the excitement led the crew to push on through the night. Clear skies, the Milky Way and a meteor shower guided the group to Lulworth Cove by morning.

After a restful day in Weymouth, the group caught an easterly wind and enjoyed a beautiful downwind sail to Brixham. Enjoying the scampi and chips on the harbour wall, the boys realised the destination was secondary to the incredible experience they were having.

The following days included anchoring in remote coves, a visit to the Dartmouth River and a leisurely return eastward. Along the way, the crew encountered multiple pods of dolphins, including one group of fourteen that swam alongside the yacht, providing a truly memorable encounter with nature. The final days brought a thrilling sail back into the Solent in gusty conditions, and a calm, sunny motor back to Gosport.

Reflecting on the week, it was clear the trip’s success was driven by the boys themselves, who managed and ran the yacht with impressive dedication and skill.

Looking ahead, plans are already underway for an even more ambitious expedition to Norway. The trip will be split into two halves: a nine-day journey from the UK to Norway in early August, followed by a swap-over of groups for the nine-day return voyage. Sailing aboard a 73ft ocean-going yacht, participants can look forward to stunning scenery and a true adventure at sea.
