Pupils Amongst All-Time Greats in International Mathematical Olympiad

Alex and Isaac were awarded gold and silver medals respectively in one of the world’s most prestigious Maths competitions this summer.

The duo represented the UK in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), held on 16 and 17 July in Bath. Each team comprises just six school-aged mathematicians, highlighting the exceptional talent required to compete on this global stage.

Alex earned a gold medal. His outstanding performance has placed him equally eighth on the list of ‘all-time greats’ in the IMO, a remarkable accomplishment in the competition’s history.

Isaac also showcased his mathematical prowess, securing a silver medal. Following outstanding A-level results with four A* grades in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Ancient Greek, he will shortly read Mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge.

The UK team placed an impressive sixth out of 108 participating countries.

Jeremy King, Teacher of Mathematics said: “This was another outstanding year for Tonbridge Maths, with Alex and Isaac contributing to the most successful UK team since 1995.  The competition was hosted very successfully in Bath University, which gave Old Tonbridgians and Tonbridge teachers an exciting opportunity to help run it as volunteers.”
