The Overseas Committee Deliver Inspiring Chapel Service to Celebrate Chinese New Year
Last Saturday’s Chapel Talk provided boys with the opportunity to explore the cultural significance of Chinese New Year through a series of engaging talks led by the Overseas Committee. Pranav (HS5), Chairman of the Committee, kicked things off by discussing the importance of the Chinese New Year in the Lunar Calendar, describing it as a time for ‘family reunions, giving thanks, and good fortune.’ He went on to inform the audience, ‘This year is the Year of the Snake, symbolising a time for embracing new beginnings and letting go of what is holding you back.’
Vice Chairman Alida (JH4) spoke about the significance of fireworks in the celebration, sharing the rich history behind this vibrant tradition. Hiroki (HS4) followed with an explanation of the Chinese Zodiac and the legendary race that led to their order being established in the zodiac calendar. To bring this story to life, Committee members re-enacted the race, with the boys energetically running up and down the pews.
The service concluded on a celebratory note with traditional Chinese New Year music and songs, beautifully translated from English to Chinese.
