Tonbridge School launches Sustainability Strategy

Tonbridge School has unveiled a comprehensive Environmental Sustainability Strategy, setting out its vision to reduce carbon emissions, energy use and material waste, enhance biodiversity, and embed environmental sustainability education at every level of School life. The strategy, which has been approved by both the Senior Leadership Team and the Governing Body, demonstrates the School’s commitment to tackling the pressing challenges of climate change and environmental degradation.

At the heart of this initiative is a determination to reduce carbon emissions by 42% within the next decade and by at least 90% by 2050. The School will achieve this through a range of measures, including the procurement of 100% renewable electricity by 2030, a 10-year rollout of solar panels, and the installation of heat pumps. In addition, Tonbridge will advance waste management practices by maximising recycling efforts, promoting the repair and repurposing of items, and eliminating single-use plastics wherever possible.

The School’s environmental efforts have already been recognised with prestigious accolades, including the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award with Distinction and the Wilder Kent Bronze Award for its conservation work. The strategy builds on these successes by expanding biodiversity initiatives, such as tree planting, creating wild habitats, and reducing reliance on chemical fertilisers and pesticides.

Will Biddle, Head of Sustainability, said: “I’m proud to launch the Environmental Sustainability Strategy after months of development involving a cross section of students, staff and outside agencies. I am delighted that it has received the green light from both the Senior Leadership Team and the Governing Body and am excited to take the work forward.”

Education is a cornerstone of the new strategy, with plans to integrate sustainability topics across the curriculum and engage pupils, staff, and parents alike. The School will continue to run its pupil-led Green Committee and Wednesday Afternoon Activities Conservation Group, offering students practical opportunities to make a difference. From restoring orchards and managing beekeeping projects to collaborating with local businesses and the Kent Wildlife Trust, these activities aim to build skills and inspire a lifelong commitment to environmental stewardship.

Strategic partnerships with organisations such as My Carbon, Countrstyle and PowerCor will support the School’s efforts to achieve its sustainability goals. Additionally, the Careers and Universities Department will promote sustainability-related courses and careers, helping to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to tackle future environmental challenges.

The strategy encourages the entire Tonbridge community to play a part in this mission. By building links with local schools, businesses, and councillors, the School aims to share resources, best practices, and inspire a collective response to the climate crisis.

Our success relies on networks and contacts from OT community and parents. Opportunities that benefit the school will be welcome
