Frederick Forsyth (PS 52-55)
Tonbridge School is deeply saddened by the news that Old Tonbridgian and famed novelist, Frederick Forsyth (PS 52-55), passed away on Monday 9 June, aged 86.
From a Flying Officer in the Royal Auxiliary Airforce to a foreign correspondent, Forsyth was best known for his thrillers and political novels, which amassed over 75 million copies sold.
His debut novel, The Day of the Jackal (1971), a gripping tale about Charles de Gaulle, gained him international fame, with his meticulous research and realistic storytelling becoming hallmarks of his style.
More of Forsyth’s major works such as, The Odessa File and The Dogs of War, as well as The Deceiver, which was written on the typewriter donated to the School, have gone on to become successful screenplays.
